| Teddy bears are donated to comfort, calm and aid in the treatment of children traumatized by accidents or circumstances requiring contact with hospitals, law enforcement, or other emergency service agencies. Assistance League of Sacramento members package and distribute 4,700 bears annually to nearly 30 agencies in the greater Sacramento area. Established in 1988. |
| Clothes for Careers provides clothing from the Second Season thrift shop to homeless women who have successfully completed the Women's Empowerment Program and are actively seeking employment as well as a new start in life. Members assist the women in choosing clothing appropriate for job interviews and the work place. An estimated 60 - 70 women are clothed annually. Established in 2003. |
| In cooperation with the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation, a docent program for the Governor's Mansion was established. Assistance League of Sacramento docents conduct special tours, participate in Living History Days and do research. Established in 1973. In 1987, the program was expanded to include History in a Trunk. This program takes the Governor's Mansion into fourth grade classrooms as part of their California history studies. Members present a slide show and display a trunk filled with items used in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The California Heritage Essay Contest honors student winners at a reception at the Governor's Mansion. |
| Eyes Right is a vision-screening project for pre-school children designed to detect possible eye problems, particularly amblyopia (lazy eye). |
| Puppeteers use scripts, props, and large child-like puppets from Kids on the Block, Inc. to perform for elementary school children. The scripts focus on issues such as autism, child abuse, divorce, organ donation, teen pregnancy, peer pressure and bullying. The primary purpose is to let children know they are not alone, that it is all right to talk to a trusted adult, and to seek guidance with these problems. This program is presented to more than 2,800 children annually. Established in 1990. |
| Operation School Bell provides shoe vouchers, school clothing or uniforms, backpacks, hygiene kits, books and other appropriate items to children in need in the greater Sacramento area. |
| Assistance League of Sacramento awards scholarships to students attending Community Colleges in the Sacramento region. The scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated financial need and have shown ability, aptitude and a promise of useful citizenship. |
| Assistance League of Sacramento members encourage seniors in retirement homes and park district senior centers to utilize their special talent to knit, crochet and sew for those in need in the local area. Members administer the program, provide free materials and instructions, pick up, package and deliver finished items to nonprofit organizations that help children and adults in crisis. Talented seniors create approximately 3,500 items annually. Established in 1980. |
